Age and weather takes its toll. The condition of six Monterey Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa) trees on the Northern, corner of the garden had deteriorated. Broken branches lay within the canopy.  Despite two years of extensive works byTorbay Council to prolong their life felling the trees was the only option. The council’s priority is public safety. A large area of the garden adjacent to the Conservative Club in Manor Road was closed to the public. A small section of the boundary wall between the club and garden was removed. A practical and convenient access entrance to allow Hi-line Tree Contractors Ltd Exeter vehicles and machinery to commence felling the trees in late April 2009.

A substantial amount of remedial work is required to this area of the garden before it can be opened to the public.  The stone wall will be rebuilt, damaged lawn rotovated and re-seeded, erect new fencing, plant out oak trees and yew hedging and tidy some of the borders. Felling these trees may to some have seemed an unacceptable measure. However the possibility of further damage to the trees  through extreme weather conditions in the future could result in untold cost and consequences especially in this age of litigation.

Two interpretation boards with map of the garden layout and Tessier article one opposite the Lindridge Road (left) entrance another by the Manor Road entrance (right) installed by Torbay Council.

Shrubs and vegetation which obscured views of the garden and Sun Temple (before left) upon entering the garden have been replaced with low growing colourful plants (after right).
